I know I've been talking a lot about The X-Files on this blog. Kinda hard not to when they have a 6-episode event going on! But two of the other things I "geek" are gymnastics and the Florida Gators! The great thing about this is that the University of Florida has a gymnastics team!
Here's a few cool things about collegiate level gymnastics:
1. They still use the old 10.0 rating scale.
This makes my little gymnastics loving heart happy. Now, not all collegiate level gymnastics still use this scale. For some reason, the men's gymnastics uses the new (confusing) scale. But not women's gymnastics. So this means that the gymnasts can be "perfect."
And this is what happened THREE TIMES this past week when Florida went up against Alabama!

Point being: Bridget Sloan. She's a former Olympian and a World Champion! This year, Bridget's Senior, and final year as a Gator, is looking like it will be her best one yet! She's won EVERY All Around competition she's competed in so far this year!
3. National Championships!
Their National Championship is called the "Super Six." It's kinda complex in the way that it works out. Definitely NOT like the whole bracket system basketball (and now football) uses. But essentially, this is what it is (for the teams anyway, there's also individual all around and event specialists in the mix):
- 36 teams total will compete in 6 regional competitions, each competition consisting of 6 teams. They are chosen by their regional qualifying score. (CRAZY weird to figure out, but there are rankings involved and all of that too!)
- The top 2 teams at each of the regional competitions will advance to the 2 day National Championship. So from 36, down to 12.
- Two semi-final rounds are held on the first day of competition. The top 3 teams from each semi-final advance to the final day of competition, the "Super Six." And then it's based upon the cumulative scores from the top 5 scoring gymnasts per team per event. School with the highest total at the end of the night wins.
So those are my biggies about gymnastics. Oh, and speaking of National Championships: Florida has won the LAST THREE!
Wow, I haven't watched gymnastics for YEARS!!!! and I didn't know that they had ever changed the rating system.
ReplyDeleteAnd I use to watch X-Files a lot as a kid and teen. I should check out this event you are talking about.

I always love watching gymnastics during the Olympics!
ReplyDeleteI've always been a big fan of gymnastics, even if I *did* get kicked out of it when I was 6 for being too tall. I still watch it on TV any chance I can!
ReplyDeleteI was totally into gymnastics as a kid! I haven't followed it since then, but I am really excited for the Olympics coming up!
ReplyDeleteI've loved gymnastics since I was a kid. I did it for 7 years and I still enjoy watching it on TV. :)
